Laurel Farm Position

Position consisted of a fortified house, fire trenches and loop-holed all linked by a communication trench. The position was surrounded by two belts of wire.

The house and wall were strengthened with sandbags. Sandbags used to block windows in the house were to be filled with broken brick.  A hole was knocked through one wall of the house, leading to a communication trench which linked the two fire trenches and loopholed wall of the fortified house position.

The fire trenches were to have sections of 3’ x 3’ and a command of 1’6” with traverses at 10 yds.

A hedge row was demolished to increase the field of fire. The demolished hedge was left as an abates (an obstacle, consisting of portions of tress and branches picketed to the ground, with their points facing the direction of the enemy).
